Old things out

Yesterday it was the day to get rid of old stuff, such as old pieces of paper, which will be used as draft paper or will go directly to recycling, old magazines, clothes and all kinds of things we accumulate during the years. It's amazing how much trash we collect, isn't it? I even have more space in my wardrobe now! And I guess we all feel better after doing away with such things. And now, have you done your annual cleaning yet? This is the moment!

So this is Christmas

Happy Christmas - John Lennon

versão bonitinha
versão dramática

So this is Christmas.
And what have you done ?
Another year over
and a new one just begun.
And so this is Christmas.
I hope you have fun,
the near and the dear ones,
the old and the young.
A very merry Christmas
and a happy new year.
Let's hope it's a good one
without any fear.

And so this is Christmas
for weak and for strong,
for rich and the poor ones.
The world is so wrong.
And so happy Christmas
for black and for white,
for yellow and red ones.
Let's stop all the fight.
A very merry Christmas
and a happy new year.
Let's hope it's a good one
without any fear.

So this is Christmas.
And what have we done ?
Another year over
and a new one just begun.
And so happy Christmas.
We hope you have fun,
the near and the dear ones,
the old and the young.
A very merry Christmas
and a happy new year.
Let's hope it's a good one
without any fear.
War is over if you want it.

Feliz Natal multilíngue!

Desabafo

Poems VII

The last one, again from 98.

Simple words, deep feelings

Would you understand
if I said "I love you"?
Would these simple words
mean how much I care about you?
Would you realize
how deep my love is
if I just said "I love you"?

Some feelings can't be explained through words
it doesn't matter how beautiful they are
Even if I used all the words that I know
it wouldn't be enough to show
what I feel here in my soul

Through words you can't see
all the pain that I'm feeling
and you also don't imagine
for your touch how much I'm willing
For you I spend my nights
just dreaming, without sleeping
And I just can't hear your voice
without feeling my body trembling

But, would you like to know all this?
Does it make any difference?
Or even though now that you see
all the love I have for you
don't you still wanna be with me?

Poems VI

Another one from 1998

The right person

Is it so difficult to find someone
you can really trust?
Is it so difficult to find someone
you can really enjoy the company?
Is it so difficult to find someone
you can really feel good with?
Is it so difficult to find someone
you think you'll be with all life long?
Is it so difficult to find someone
you think your problems will disappear in his company?
Is it so difficult to find someone
you think you'll share all good and bad moments with?
Is it so difficult to find someone
you can really love?

Poems V

From 1997

The road of destiny

There's a long road in front of me
The way is narrow and the air is dark
I need courage to start walking because
I know this way will lead me to my destiny
And I have to reach the end.
But, it's so hard to start...
Looking behind I can see flowers and a clear sky
In spite of this I can't go on as I'm going
I have to proceed, I have to go ahead.
I always used to have help from people
I know I can count on them.
However, I have to learn how to walk alone.
Difficulties will come, and I'll be ready for them
Problems, I'll have many, but I'll solve them all
I'll find many stones in this way
And I'll overcome everything.
The highest mountains won't be a wall for me
The deepest holes I'll jump over them
The largest rivers will be a drop of water
Because I believe in me,
I know I can win,
And I will.

Poems IV

1998, when I was in Advanced level already

Hard Times

Sometimes I feel I'm free as a bird
Flying in the wide blue sky
But there are other times I can't even breathe
And I guess I'd rather die

These times of sadness
It seems they will never pass by
I feel a deep loneliness
And I just don't know why

But I know I'll find a way
To overcome all this pain
I'll learn how to fly again
Come what may.

Poems III

The most pessimistic one. Gosh! Teenage is cruel! From 99, I mean, I wasn't exactly a teen anymore, had just turned 20...

Despair

Life is unfair
Love is unreal
God is a lie
Peace is a try
People are sad
People are bad
Law is a fake
No money we make
Happiness has gone
Joy hasn't come
Sadness is here
Loneliness is near
The end's coming
The end's clear

Next days I'll post a few more. Let me know if you liked them!

Poems II

Another example, from 1997, when I was in High-intermediate level. This poem was quite interesting because I decided to write a love poem without using the typical words Love, Life, Death, Heart and Forever

Words are useless, sometimes

How can I express my feelings
without so useful words?
Is it possible to show you
what I'm feeling inside
without describing it in words?
I'm sure you'll understand
Feelings are to be felt, not heard
Words can go with the wind,
Promisses can be broken,
Letters can be burnt,
Pictures can be torn,
But feelings... They will last
They can be hidden for some moments, even years,
but one day they will arise
And on this day, you'll have no choice
unless follow your hea... (ops, I almost wrote it)
Useless words?
In a poem, may be,
but in our existence
they are the only things that matter.

Poems

A few days ago I found out an old notebook, from my teenage days, when I used to write texts and even poems, some of them in English. Even though they are not masterpieces, I decided to post a few ones here. I've corrected the mistakes, as I was beginning my studies when I wrote them, but the text is the same. Interesting to remember how I wrote and what I felt 12, 15 years ago. (And I guess I was much more pessimist)

Here's the first one, written when I was only 16 (sweet sixteen?) and was studying in Basic 2!

Hope still survives

I looked for peace
and I found war.
I looked for joy
and I found sadness.
I looked for friends
and I didn't find them.
I looked for life
and I just found death.
I was almost giving up
when I found you,
who showed me the beauty of life
hidden among the devastation:
a bird flying in the sky,
a child playing in the street,
an old man feeding the pigeon in the square,
a flower growing among in the garden.
Life, finally, came back to normal.
But, until when?

ICELT's over!

After a very tough and exhausting year, the course ICELT is finally over! Today we had our last class and handed in the last Assignment. Now, we just have to wait for the final grades and the certificate itself.
It's been 8 academic papers, 8 reports on classes we observed, 5 classes in which we were observed (the first was a mock, but I got nervous anyway) plus the 5 corresponding self-appraisals, and the input sessions of the course, obviously.
We all had been informed that it was a demanding course, but, to be sincere, it was harder than I expected. Exactly because I've always been a good and organized student (and modest, for sure), I thought I wouldn't have much trouble. Besides, I'm an experienced teacher and I love writing. However, every time I had to get feedback on a paper I even dreaded opening the email! What's more, after some sessions or some feedback on the classes we taught, I had the impression that I knew nothing and everything I had been doing was wrong!
It could have been worse, of course, I'm proud to say I never spent a sleepless night to do the papers for the ICELT (although I dreamed about it a few times) and I always managed to have them done at least a few days in advance. But I did hit the computer and the printer a thousand times as they didn't work when they should. And I did think about quiting the course a couple of times. And I did get angry and cry many times. And all my friends know I was stressed because of this course.
Was it worth? Well, paraphrasing Fernando Pessoa, "everything is worthwhile"... I certainly learned many things and raised my awareness about what I have been doing in class, besides getting to know nice people that I hope to keep in touch with. Will I take the DELTA? No, thanks.
So, you're probably thinking that now I'll just relax, right? Not really, I've just taken the test for a post-graduation course in translation that I intend to start next year!

Interview - On the road - Família Goldschmidt

ETAPA CONE SUL
Duração: 331 dias. Inicio: Outubro / 1999
Destinos: Sul do Brasil, Uruguai, Argentina, Chile e Paraguai.
Distância percorrida: 31 mil quilômetros

ETAPA BRASIL

Distância percorrida: 60 mil quilômetros

ETAPA PERU
Duração: 46 dias Inicio: Dezembro / 2008
Destinos: 6 regiões do centro e sul do Peru
Distância percorrida: 7 mil quilômetros

ETAPA BARILOCHE
Duração: 10 dias Inicio: Março de 2009
Destinos: Bariloche na Argentina e Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi
Distância percorrida: 2 mil quilômetros

ETAPA LAGOS ANDINOS

As expedições menores consomem menos tempo.
Isto nunca me aconteceu.

What expressions tick you off?".

"Dude, where's my car?"

Tem também o clássico caso de escreverem "should of" ao invés do correto "should have". Além destes tem "me and him" antes de verbos. Ou seja, ao invés da pessoa dizer "He and I study English", alguns dizem "me and him study English". Isto equivale a dizer "mim e ele estudamos inglês". No mesmo rumo cito o tal do "between you and I".

That's all, folks! Oops! 'Folks' também está na lista das irritantes. Então o jeito é terminar dizendo 'That's all for today, guys'. See you! Take care!

Site - Writing tips

If you have difficulty in writing or just want to improve your writing skills, take a look at the site http://grammar.about.com/. It contains information about business writing, grammar, punctuation, composing sentences, paragraphs and essays, figures of speech and many other tips.

Here you are ten tips from the site to improve your writing:

1.Lead with your main idea.
As a general rule, state the main idea of a paragraph in the first sentence--the topic sentence. Don't keep your readers guessing.

2.Vary the length of your sentences.
In general, use short sentences to emphasize ideas. Use longer sentences to explain, define, or illustrate ideas.

3.Put key words and ideas at the beginning or end of a sentence.
Don't bury a main point in the middle of a long sentence. To emphasize key words, place them at the beginning or (better yet) at the end.

4.Vary sentence types and structures.
Vary sentence types by including occasional questions and commands. Vary sentence structures by blending simple, compound, and complex sentences.

5.Use active verbs.
Don't overwork the passive voice or forms of the verb "to be." Instead, use active verbs in the active voice.

6.Use specific nouns and verbs.
To convey your message clearly and keep your readers engaged, use concrete and specific words that show what you mean.

7.Cut the clutter.
When revising your work, eliminate unnecessary words.

8.Read aloud when you revise.
When revising, you may hear problems (of tone, emphasis, word choice, and syntax) that you can't see. So listen up!

9.Actively edit and proofread.
It's easy to overlook errors when merely looking over your work. So be on the lookout for common trouble spots when studying your final draft.

10.Use a dictionary.
When proofreading, don't trust your spell checker: it can tell you only if a word is a word, not if it's the right word.

Modern Times - Lack of time II

Have you watched that scene in Modern Times, where Chaplin works so much at the factory that the starts screwing/unscrewing all kinds of things? Well, I may not have reached that level, but I guess I'm a 'bit' tired, as I scheduled two classes at the same time in two different places with two different students! Besides, I was sending an email to two friends to decide on a birthday present for another friend of us, but I sent it to the person who's getting the gift!
Am I going crazy? Just because I have five groups in one school (including a Spanish one), a private student and I also teach in five different companies, besides taking the ICELT (last week, thank God!), Italian classes, writing stories for a magazine, revising magazines for another publisher and keeping this blog?

Julie & Julia

Yesterday I watched this cute movie in which Meryl Streep is a cook who inspires another woman many decades later through her book. Beautiful, but not 'that special' to have been presented at Mostra de Cinema... Anyway, I had read a review that after watching this film you'd probably leave the movie theater feeling like cooking, eating and writing a blog. Well, eating I did, but as cooking isn't my cup of tea, I guess I'll just keep on writing this blog...

Lack of time

Sorry for not updating the blog this week, the last post was on Sunday! I promised myself to update it at least three times a week. Well, considering Sunday as the first day of the week, this is the second post, so I only need to update it tomorrow again to keep my word... :-)
The reason I decided to write now is exactly to point out that lack of time cannot (and should not) be an excuse for us not doing what we need to (or want to). I didn't have much time this week (actually, the whole year, but that's not the case), but it didn't prevent me from writing, even though a little late.
Today I went to four (very) different places in the city: Santana, Consolação, Paraíso and Penha. Yesterday I had to substitute a teacher at Wizard, besides my own classes in Vila Mariana and Tatuapé. On Wednesday I went to the doctor, went to Italian class and wrote four (short) stories for the magazine I also work for, on Monday and Tuesday I don't even remember everything I did. Even so, I prepared all my classes, correct all the homework the students handed in and even went to Yoga classes. Ok, my last Assignment for the Icelt is a little late, but I still have a week to finish it.
So, dear students, I guess you already know what the final message is, right? Don't tell me you didn't have time to do your homework!

Interview - Dogme ELT - William Chaves Gomes

Do you know what the Dogme ELT is about? I didn't know as well...
After watching a presentation from a colleague at the ICELT, where she introduced to us the article Dog Days, by William Chaves Gomes, I decided to interview the author, and he kindly gave me this interview.

Tell us a bit about your graduation and experience.
William
- I graduated in Letras and I’ve been working as an EFL teacher and teacher trainer for 13 years now. I’m also a Cambridge ESOL oral examiner and an EFL writer. In 2006 I moved to England, where I did the DELTA and where I started teaching multi-nationality groups. At the moment I’m based in London, working as a teacher trainer for the Trinity College Cert. TESOL and writing components for a series of coursebooks to be published by Richmond Publishing in 2010.

What's the DELTA course like?
William -
The DELTA is an incredible course and you learn a great deal about teaching and about the language itself. But it’s not an easy course. It’s really hard work and you have to be extremely organized, motivated and above all: you need to have a passion for ELT.

Is the Dogme ELT a new method? What is it exactly?
William -
I wouldn’t say it is a new method but more like another teaching tool for the teacher. The Dogme ELT idea derives from the Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier and three other colleagues who believed that the art of making cinema has been destroyed by the high-budget and highly technological Hollywood-style productions. Because of that, they created a set of vows of chastity, known as Dogme-95, in order to protect what they call “the joy of filmmaking”. One of these vows says, for example, that ‘Shooting should be done on locations. Pros and sets must not be brought in (if a particular prop is necessary for the story, a location must be chosen where the prop is to be found’. Based on this idea, Scott Thornbury suggests that the absence of materials, such as loads of worksheets, videos, downloadable resources and the like, maximises interaction in class and allows language to emerge out of communicative needs of the people in the classroom.
Generally speaking, in a Dogme lesson the teacher suggests a topic for the class to discuss or, alternatively, asks students to choose what they want to talk about in that specific lesson. Then, the teacher works on the emerging language generated in the discussion and helps students reformulate it or provides students with the next level of the language they need. There are many ‘Dogme versions’. It may range from a materials-free lesson to one in which students bring the materials and nobody really knows what the focus of the lesson will be. It is worthy pointing out that the Dogme ELTis in not opposition to materials in class. Dogme has to do with lessons which are, above all, language that emerges out of students’ communicative needs, interests and desires.

Do you know any school which apply it in a whole course?
William -
I don’t know a school where they use the Dogme ELT in a whole course and I honestly think it is rather utopian to let students dictate the whole syllabus of a course. Teachers are professionals and they know better what students need to learn. Nevertheless accepting students’ contributions and working language gaps or the language that they need is equally important. That’s why in my article I encourage teachers to include ‘slots’ in their lessons. I am convinced that Dogme works beautifully as another teaching tool to foster students’ learning process but not as a method to be followed. Maybe I’ll be proved wrong one day, who knows?

I have the impression that many ELT teachers already do some of the activities suggested in your article, such as asking the students about their weekends or talking about what's going on on TV or just having a conversation on a free topic. How do these chats differ from the 'Dogme slots'?
William -
I’ll answer these questions based on the teachers I have been observing. I am not generalising! Being a teacher trainer I observe from 8 to 10 lessons a week. From my observations I can say that teachers do interact with their students and they do use many of the activities I suggest in my article. Nonetheless, these activities differ from the Dogme slots in the sense that most of the teachers I observe use such activities as a warmer and, many times, they miss golden opportunities to fill in students’ lexical or grammatical gaps simply because ‘that grammar topic’ will only be dealt with in the following week, month or semestre. Other times, teachers feel reluctant to engage in a 5-minute ‘chat’ with students because they have other fish to fry or even because that part of the lesson was not supposed to focus on vocabulary or grammar. Fair enough! But that’s not Dogme! Dogme slots in class have to do with the language that emerges from students with a clear focus on this language, be grammar or lexis.

It seems that by allowing students to talk freely in the classroom all the time, without a guided activity or a planned way to correct errors and mistakes, there will be lack of some specific content after a set of classes, won't it? How do you manage that?
William -
As I said before, I’m not 100% sure the Dogme ELT works as method to be used in a whole course. I believe in Dogme lessons and slots in a lesson. I would just like to make it clear that Dogme has nothing to do with allowing students to talk freely just for the sake of talking, without guidance, a purpose or an error correction stage. It’s quite the opposite. The teacher has to be on the ball all the time so that he diagnoses the language gaps to be worked on. Students must get something out of this ‘free conversation in class.’ Dogme has nothing to do with killing time or just having fun.

In a monolingual class, isn't there a tendency that students use their native language much more than the target language during these 'Dogme slots', as they will probably lack vocabulary to talk as fluently as they wanted? What does the teacher do in this case?
William -
The teacher has to encourage English in class. Allowing students to use L1 doesn’t sound a good idea to me. Students have to benefit from Dogme lessons/ slots. The teacher has to understand/feel what students what to say or ask them to try to explain in L2 what they want to say and then work on the emerging language. However, the teacher must be sensible. If the students vocabulary is very poor, there is no point starting a topic because students don’t have enough language to talk about it and the whole experience will end up being frustrating.

Many teachers will probably say they won't have much time to insert Dogme slots in their classes due to the extensive syllabus they need to cover. What's your answer for that?
William -
Dogme slots don’t need to be long. Again, they have to do with teacher’s ability to diagnose what students are trying to say and provide the language they need in a given moment or reformulate it. Of course, spending some time with the Dogme slots means that the teacher will have to skip a stage of his original lesson. I honestly see no problems in skipping an activity in a lesson. As teachers, we know which activities can be skipped or done as homework if necessary. Also, the teacher can plan an ‘unplanned slot’ in the lesson and fill it in with another activity in case no emerging language crops up. Finally I believe that we have to keep asking ourselves that old question: Are we teaching the book or the students?

Any additional comment you wish.
William -
Give yourself sometime to think about the importance of the emerging language and when you feel ready or comfortable, give it a try. You may be pleasantly surprised.

. Ouça o inglês e tente imitar o sotaque. Se possível, leia um texto junto com o CD, ou seja, seguindo o script;

. Assista a filmes com o áudio e legenda em inglês para comparar as diferenças entre a escrita e a fala e também para buscar alguns padrões fonéticos;

. Ouça programas de rádio em inglês pela Internet;

. Adquira o hábito de assistir a programas em inglês na TV a cabo;

. Compre um livro de pronúncia com CD. Há ótimos materiais nas livrarias;

. Grave a sua voz. Analise as gravações e procure detectar seus erros mais comuns. Se não conseguir fazer isso sozinho, peça a ajuda de um professor;

. Crie uma lista de palavras, expressões e frases que são frequentemente pronunciadas de forma incorreta. Trabalhe nesta lista, lendo e relendo até que fale corretamente;

. Leia em voz alta constantemente. Grave a sua fala enquanto estiver lendo. Ouça e repita as palavras inúmeras vezes;

. Procure entender os símbolos fonéticos que ficam após as palavras nos dicionários e antes das respectivas explicações. Ajuda a melhorar sua percepção das diferenças sonoras e peculiaridades da sua língua e da língua estrangeira que está estudando;

. Consulte dicionários on-line para checar a pronúncia das palavras, muitos deles têm a opção do som;

Interview - Movies in the classroom

Do you like using movies in the classroom, but sometimes run out of ideas?
Thanks to Claudio Azevedo, coordinator and teacher trainer at Casa Thomas Jefferson, in Brasília (DF), you won't have this problem anymore.
He has two blogs where he posts ready activities to be used in the classes, including the snippets and the worksheets. His first blog http://moviesegmentstoassessgrammargoals.blogspot.com/, as the name suggests, is aimed at teaching grammar through videos, and the second one, http://warmupsfollowups.blogspot.com/, can be used to stimulate discussions, teach vocabulary, brainstorming etc.
Get to know a little more about his work:

Tell us something about your graduation and experience.
Claudio -
I've been an English teacher for 26 years, 25 years just at Casa Thomas Jefferson, where I am currently the Lake Branch Coordinator. Before becoming the Coordinator, I supervised course levels, developing materials for teachers of all levels. I graduated in English Letters and I am a teacher trainer as well. I teach Methodology.

How did you have the idea to create the blogs and when did you start them?
Claudio -
It was not a planned thing. I'm not a technology freak, so I decided to learn a few tools on the internet that would help me not be technologically behind the teachers I supervise. Ronaldo Mangueira Jr, a fantastic teacher at CTJ, provided the Coordinators with a course. We started with blogging. One of our assigned pieces of homework was to create a blog. That's when I decided to develop my blog, using the activities I had developed for workshops I used to present, connecting grammar and movie segments. That's why I'm so surprised with the results.

How many activities have you published already in the blogs? What's the main difference between the blogs?
Claudio -
At Movie Segments to Assess Grammar Goals, so far, 78 published activities. Planned and programmed, there are 60 activities. I publish a new one every Sunday. At Movie Segments for Warm-Ups and Follow-Ups, my two-month old blog, 13 published and 50 programmed. I publish a new post every Saturday. They are completely different blogs. Grammar Goals is for grammar practice and assessment, which is something that teachers have difficulty finding activities about, using movie segments. Warm-Ups and Follow-Ups is for topic based classes, focusing on conversation, vocabulary acquisition and listening. What they have in common is the fact they have the lesson plan and the segment, but the goals are different. Grammar Goals also have the worksheets for each of the activities.

How do you have the ideas for the activities? Do you first think of an activity and then try to find a suitbale movie or do you come up with something according to what you see?
Claudio -
I do it both ways. Sometimes I look for a certain grammar point and watch the movie with those eyes. Some other times, I think about the grammar point while viewing the scene. The most important thing, though, is the scene itself. It has to be contextualized, you can't depend on too much explanation to understand it, and it has to be appealing. It must be from 2 to 7 minutes long, otherwise it can be distracting and out of focus. This kind of scene can be used for various grammar points. Usually, the best scenes are in the beginning of the movie, when the director is contextualizing the plot. But it is not always like that. Well, I go to the movies with a post-it pad and write down - present perfect, subjunctive - so I remember it. I know, no one will ever do it...

Can any movie be used in classroom? What recommendations would you give for teachers?
Claudio - Certainly not. You must know the audience. Observe the ratings and the cultural aspects. Even adults may be sensitive to certain topics. I avoid scenes with overt sex, homossexualism, politics and religion. But the teacher is the one to select what can be shown. Brazilians are pretty liberal to certain topics, such as racism and sensuality, but it may be different in other places. Violence is so common nowadays. If it is not too blunt, it is fine with me. But you must observe the rating and the audience. Always.

How do you insert the snippets of the movies in your blog? Do you download them from Youtube, for example, or do you use any program to record the scenes?
Claudio -
I do not use youtube. Major film making companies may eventually withdraw the videos from youtube because of copyrights, so nobody will have it available and the objective of the blog is lost. I upload it directly to blogger. The disadvantage is that you cannot enlarge it. The advantage is that you can still download it and it will always be available. I have a friend who prepares the snippets for me. Remember, I'm not a techy. My purpose is 100% non commercial and educational, so I'm fine by copyrights issues. Everything is free on my blogs.

Should teachers use the movies with or without subtitles in the classroom? Does it depend on your aim with the activity or on the level of the students?
Claudio -
It depends. If the focus is listening comprehension, no subtitles. My goal, though, is grammar. Grammar is contextualization. The better students understand the scene, the more accurate their grammatical production will be. So, subtitles on, in English. For the conversation blog, I also leave them on. It makes the second viewing unnecessary most of the times, which makes it less time consuming. They talk more, because they understand the scene better and have more to say. Beginners and basic learners need scenes with little language and lots of visual input. Otherwise, they panic. Subtitles on always make them more confident.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using movies in the classroom?
Claudio -
I only see advantages. Authentic language, real motivators, easy access, everyone likes it. Disadvantages? Well, dealing with technology can cause unexpected difficulties right when you are showing it. But, there are great advantages, for sure.

Any additional comment you wish.
Claudio -
I've always loved and used movies in the classroom for all sorts of reasons. I always see all kinds of films and have been doing it all my life. Nowadays the access to movies is so easy that it became a piece of cake for me to come up with these activities. That's why I like sharing. It can be so difficult for other teachers, and making these activities available certainly help the lesson planning of my peers. I love to receive a message from South Africa, for example, saying about how their students enjoyed one certain activity. Or from the Ukraine, saying how the teacher's life was facilitated by the blog. I have been receiving so much recognition that I don't intend to stop doing it. Connecting hobbies and work is everyone's dream. What seems to be a lot of work - well, it is - is what I passionately prepare for my students and classes. Then, I share it. I hope teachers and students enjoy it too.

I've won a prize from Pearson Longman!

This week I was informed that I was the winner of the First Lesson Competition promoted by Pearson Longman website. Teachers from all over the world sent lesson plans to take part in the contest and I won with the following activity, based on the movie The Devil Wears Prada.

The Devil Wears Prada

Answer the questions as you watch the second scene from the film (from 3’25” to 10’15”)

1 – Describe Andrea’s clothes and appearance and compare to the other girls in the office.
2 – Why did Emily laugh when Andrea said she wanted to work there?
3 – Who’s Miranda? How can you describe her physically and psychologically?
4 – Why did everybody get nervous when Emily got a message? What did they start to do?
5 – What happened during the job interview with Andrea? Was Miranda interested in her?
6 – How did Andrea convince Miranda she was the best person for the job?

Now, discuss the questions with a partner

Do you like fashion? Do you read fashion magazines?
Do you like to wear fashion clothes? Do you care about designer labels?
How much would you pay for a T-shirt, a pair of pants, a pair of shoes, a bag etc?
Is fashion important for society? Why (not)?
What’s your opinion about people who spend a lot of money on clothes and accessories? If you were very rich, would you spend much money in clothes too?
Do you think people judge others for their appearance? Why (not)?
How careful should we be about appearance when going to a job interview? What should/shouldn’t we do?

If you are interested in the answer key, just send me an email.

Interview - Andreas Schroeter - Founder of the biggest online dictionary

Andreas Schroeter is a German guy who loves languages and decided to share this passion with the world with a project to create the biggest online dictionary, the portal bab.la.

Check his ideas in this interview:
Tell us something about your education and professional experience.
Andreas -
My background is actually in business. But I have always been fascinated by new countries and cultures. My mother is Swedish so I guess I have this explorer gene from here. That's why I decided to study international business. I went on exchange to Canada and Sweden and did two internships in France and Sweden. So I am fluent in German and English, quite good at French and Swedish and have some basic Spanish knowledge.

How did you have the idea for the site bab.la? How did you create it and when?
Andreas -
I had the idea while being on exchange. Communicating in another language can be quite tricky and I wanted to have a website to go to that is all about languages: Where you could look up translations, find the right phrases, practice your vocabulary and so on. It took me another 7 years to actually start the website, but in July 2007 it finally went live.

Who's the team behind the site?
Andreas -
Patrick is our IT guy, who is in charge of all the programming. Thomas is my brother. He got so fascinated by the idea that he decided to join and is now managing all the content. I am in charge of the making bab.la known to the world. In addition, we have one native speaker for every language here in Hamburg.

You have a very ambitious project, to create the world's biggest online dictionary. How do you plan to do that?
Andreas - You need a bold vision to succeed
. We are working as hard as we can but it wouldn't work without all the users helping us. Every day users add new words, create new language quizzes, put new vocabulary lessons online and share these with other users. This wiki-style approach allows us to grow fast. Everyone is welcome to join and help us.

The site offers free content and it doesn't work as a tool for advertising a school or online sales, for example. How does the the site make profit?
Andreas -
The idea is to share as much information as possible for free. The advertising is necessary to cover our costs. However, we also offer some content such as vocabulary lessons for a premium fee. These lessons are licensed from known brands such as Langenscheidt and Pons and we keep a share of the premium fee.

What's the main difference between your site and other similar multilingual online dictionaries?
Andreas -
This is going to be a slightly biased answer ;-) Of course we feel that we offer the best product. In our dictionaries, we offer various additional functions such as pronunciation, synonyms, sample sentences and so forth. We also work on adding new translations every day, through our team and the users. Besides the dictionaries we offer great additional products such as our phrasebook or our vocabulary lessons.

It seems that the project involves an emotional aspect, as you want to have a 'portal where language lovers can meet and exchange their ideas and learn languages from each other'. How important is emotion in learning languages?
Andreas - Emotion is the best way to learn a language
. I married a Canadian and trust me, my English is getting better every day. If you feel strongly about a language, learning will be fun and you won't perceive it as work. You'll try to use it as often as you can and thereby improve way quicker than by just sitting in a language class.

Do you know Brazil? Can you speak Portuguese? The site offers a Portuguese dictionary, but the flag is from Portugal. Do you intend to have something on the site related to the differences between Portuguese from Portugal and from Brazil?
Andreas -
No, unfortunately I don't speak Portuguese. Regarding the flags we had a very long discussion about it since some languages are spoken in several countries. We decided to stick to the flag where the word originates from. I know it is 'unfair' for some countries but it helps the user find the right language a lot faster. We also include as many regional words and translations as we can. You'll find them marked with the country it used in. One example would be the translation for bus.

Happy Teachers' Day!

Why God Made Teachers

By Kevin William Huff (at least that's the credit according to google...)

When God created teachers,
He gave us special friends
To help us understand His world
And truly comprehend
The beauty and the wonder
Of everything we see,
And become a better person
With each discovery.

When God created teachers,
He gave us special guides
To show us ways in which to grow
So we can all decide
How to live and how to do
What's right instead of wrong,
To lead us so that we can lead
And learn how to be strong.

Why God created teachers,
In His wisdom and His grace,
Was to help us learn to make our world
A better, wiser place.

A hundred and sixty-eight hours (168 horas)
Normalmente, as duas coisas juntas. E muitas vezes qual é a desculpa? A famosa falta de tempo. Claro.

49h – Dormir
14h – Comer (incluindo preparar a comida, lavas as louças etc.)

• Assistir a novelas
• Acessar a internet
• Ir ao banco
• Praticar esportes
• Etc.

Bem, nas palavras sábias de seu professor de inglês: it’s up to you, my friend!
Aí então entra a máxima make time.
O nome do jogo é sacrifício.

Time to read

Many students (and even teachers) say they don't have time to read. Well, I don't agree with that because I believe that, when you really like and want to read, you find some time. You can read a few minutes before you sleep, during your lunch time, when you're waiting for the bus, while you're on the bus/subway, on Sunday afternoon instead of watching TV (there's nothing to watch on Sundays), on a rainy holiday like today, when you're waiting for the doctor/dentist, and in many other places. Just take a book with you every time and you'll find plenty of time to read.

To prove you that, these are some of the books I've read this year, not considering the technical ones for the ICELT.

1 - Eat, pray, love - Elizabeth Gilbert
2 - De Bagdá, com muito amor - Jay Kopelman and Melinda Roth
3 - Equador - Miguel Sousa Tavares
4 - O Monte Cinco - Paulo Coelho (yeah, sometimes I read him, but this one is boring...)
5 - Blog Corporativo - Fábio Cypriano
6 - Todos os nomes - José Saramago
7 - Amar pode dar certo - Roberto Shinyashiki and Eliana Bitencourt
8 - Empreendedorismo na veia - Rogério Cher ('business phase')
9 - Inovadores em ação - William Taylor and Polly Labarre
10 - Você está louco! - Ricardo Semler
11 - Fora de mim - Richard Bach
12 - Aventura em Bagdá - Agatha Christie ('just-to-relax phase')
13 - Entrega especial - Danielle Steel
14 - Comunicação global - Lair Ribeiro ('self-help phase')
15 - Prosperidade - Lair Ribeiro
16 - A casa do poeta trágico - Carlos Heitor Cony
17 - O que os clientes amam - Harry Beckwith
18 - Sinners - Jackie Collins ('pocket-books phase')
19 - Morning, noon and night -Sidney Sheldon
20 - Quem mexeu no meu queijo? - Spencer Johnson

Pagode versions

This is just to have some fun. A Brazilian guy who lives in Buenos Aires translated, literally, some old 'pagode' songs into English, in acoustic versions. "Marrom bombom" became "Brown Goodgood", "Cheia de manias" is "Full of habits" and "Que se chama amor" is now "That's called love".
Check them out.

30!

I'm turning 30 today - last year I tell my age ;-) - and decided to write about some things I've done this year, because I have the impression that it has been a very busy year. I guess I need vacation...
Here you go: (teachers, you can use this to teach Present Perfect)

This year, for the first time,
- I've taught Portuguese for Brazilians (oficina de reciclagem)
- I've taught Portuguese for a foreigner (only two classes, but I did)
- I've taught English by phone (only two classes again, but a different experience)
- I've taught Spanish for a Basic group
- I've done my first 'official' work as a translator (some pages of tour guides from Rio and Turkey)
- I've given three volunteer workshops at a social program in Lapa
- I've created (and kept!) this professional blog
- I've interviewed ELT professionals for this blog (have you read all the interviews?)
- I've taken the ICELT course (almost in the end, finally!)
- I've done rapel (cool!)
- I've driven a kart (not very cool, well, maybe because I was the last one)
- I've played paintball (painfull, but cool!)
- I've been to Flip, in Parati (interesting!)
- I've suffered (and survived!) a bus accident

Besides, although not for the first time,
- I've changed jobs
- I've returned to Italian classes
- I've taught kids again
- I've taught many in-company classes
- I've written some stories for the newspaper Diário de S.Paulo
- I've written many stories for Revista do Jornaleiro (have you seen the post about the 100th edition?)
- I've written a story for Revista Young, to be published soon
- I've revised magazines about handcraft and cooking
- I've participated in some races (well, at least I pretend I run...)
And I do have time to read (a lot - wait for next post), meet my friends, go out, watch movies... so, dear students, don't tell me you don't have time to do your homework.

We still have three months to the end of the year... Wanna try something different? Call me up!

APRENDIZAGEM NO ADULTO

ORIENTANDO ADULTOS A APRENDER
